Our assessments and treatments cover a range of mental disorders, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), mood disorders, anxiety disorders including obsessive‑compulsive disorder (OCD), post‑traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and eating disorders.

Dr. William Ackers

Consultant Psychiatrist

Dr William Ackers has an interest in recovery-based models of care, emphasising holistic, evidence-based treatment. He draws on multiple psychotherapeutic modalities in addition to biological treatments and views all patient interactions as opportunities for therapeutic conversations and positive change. He ascribes to the view that treatment is more likely to be effective when developed in partnership with the patient and their family where appropriate.

  • Dr William Ackers is a Child and Adolescent and General Adult psychiatrist, he sees patients from childhood onwards. He graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery in 2005 from the University of East Anglia, Norwich in the United Kingdom. He moved to Auckland, New Zealand in 2012 where he completed his generalist training as well as the certificate of advanced learning in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry via the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP).

    Dr William Ackers has over ten years of experience in psychiatry and has worked in both metropolitan and rural areas in Australia and New Zealand. He has predominantly worked in both general adult and child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS). He has held the position of honorary senior lecturer at Auckland University and is an accredited supervisor for RANZCP trainees.

Dr. Eliot Frickey

Consultant Psychiatrist

Dr Eliot Frickey is a psychiatrist with over 10 years experience working in a variety of different settings. He has expertise in the treatment of a wide range of mental health conditions, whilst taking into account the persons physical health and wellbeing. He prefers to work collaboratively with patients and maintains a focus on their goals for treatment. 

Using evidence-based practice as a guide, Eliot is able to work with patients to create a holistic plan that suits the individual and helps them get the most out of life.

  • Dr Eliot Frickey is a General Adult Psychiatrist and sees patients from age 18 onwards. He graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 2011 from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. He completed his generalist training through the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) and has worked in many hospitals and community settings in both New Zealand and Australia.  Eliot is an accredited supervisor for RANZCP trainees and regularly engages in the training of junior doctors.

Dr. Mohammad Faizal

Consultant Psychiatrist

Dr Faizal is a Fellow of the Royal College of psychiatrists, United Kingdom and Royal Australian and New Zealand College of psychiatrists. He has worked as a consultant psychiatrist in the UK and Australia for 18 years.

Dr Faizal has Royal College accreditation in General adult and Addictions psychiatry. His clinical expertise includes disorders such as ADHD, depression, anxiety, psychosis, bipolar disorder, PTSD, alcohol, and drug misuse.

He has a special interest in adult ADHD and provides a comprehensive and client focused ADHD assessment and a holistic management plan.

At Empowered Minds he will be offering services assessing and managing adult ADHD.

  • Dr Faizal has experience working with patients experiencing psychiatric sequelae of brain injury and neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's, Huntington’s, and late stage dementia.

     

    He has published in international journals in areas such as addictions and mood disorders. He is passionate about timely and safe access to care for patients and has been awarded Clinical Excellence awards for patient centred care as a clinical director in the United Kingdom. He moved to Australia in 2015 to work as a clinical Director for a large metro service in Brisbane. He currently works in public health and private practice in Australia.

Dr. Sean Mayne

Consultant Psychiatrist

Dr Sean Mayne is a general adult psychiatrist and fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP). He has an interest in child and adolescent psychiatry and is currently completing an advanced certificate in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He sees patients from adolescence onwards.

Dr Mayne has a passion for working with young people and adults, and values the importance of early intervention to promote recovery and wellbeing. He provides evidence based care that is respectful of, and responsive to, the preferences, needs and values of the person he is working with. He adopts a shared decision-making approach, collaborating with young people, adults, their families, and other health professionals. Dr Mayne believes in trauma informed care and recognizing the impact that past and present trauma can have on the onset, complexity and severity of a person’s experience of mental ill-health.

  • Dr Mayne graduated from James Cook University, Townsville, with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery in 2015, and completed his Honours in 2016. He has also completed a Master of Psychiatry through the University of Melbourne in 2022.He completed his internship and psychiatry specialist training at Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service. During his training he worked with children, youth and adults in a variety of treatment settings including inpatient units, outpatient clinics, rehabilitation and subacute mental health facilities and remote aboriginal communities. Through his varied experiences of working with young people and adults, from a diversity of backgrounds, he is able to adapt and tailor his approach to the individual.

    Dr Mayne moved to the Sunshine Coast in 2024 with his family and worked with the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service. Dr Mayne is an accredited supervisor for RANZCP trainees. Dr Mayne now maintains 2 days a week working for the Youth Early Psychosis Service at the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service seeing patients between 12 and 25 years old, and works with the Empowered Minds Clinics 3 days a week.

Claudi Hills

Practice Manager

Claudi has a background as an Occupational Therapist, working in Mental Health including adult inpatient and child and adolescent outpatient settings as well as in developmental paediatrics. She also holds a BSc in psychology from Auckland University. Her experience in these areas, paired with her drive to provide consistent, high quality patient care led to her being employed to design and develop mental health care services in regional Western Australia, where she also provided supervision to clinical staff. Claudi is currently focussing on her role as co-founder and manager of Empowered Minds Clinic with a view to also providing client facing care in the future when time allows.
